Getting the Most Out of Your Bamboo Toothbrush

Getting the Most Out of Your Bamboo Toothbrush

Congratulations! You bought a House of Hazel bamboo toothbrush! Thank you for helping shape a better world by using one less plastic toothbrush, which, did you know, takes 500 years to break down? Yikes!

Your purchase from House of Hazel helps to ensure we maintain a healthy planet and home. Because you’re so awesome, we want to help you get the most out of your purchase. Here are a few suggestions on how to maintain your toothbrush, know when it’s time to get a new one, and ideas to upcycle, recycle and extend the life of your toothbrush.

Storing & General Maintenance

Bamboo has natural anti-fungal components in its genetic makeup, which is why it makes for a fantastic toothbrush material. So caring for your bamboo toothbrush is easy. But here are a few tips to keep it fresh and extend your toothbrushes’ life.

  1. After use, shake off water and pat the handle dry with a towel.
  2. Store your bamboo toothbrush in a dry place, like a cup of cabinet shelf.
  3. When traveling with your toothbrush, cover the bristles or carry in a plastic free toothbrush case.

Cleaning

If you just got over a cold or simply want to give your bamboo toothbrush a good clean, behold the power of baking powder and vinegar!!!

  • Simply dilute a cup of water with 2 tablespoons white  vinegar and a teaspoon of baking soda.
  • Soak your bristles in this mixture for 15-20 minutes.
  • Rise thoroughly and dry.
  • You can also soak your bristles in an antibacterial mouthwash.

How often should I change my toothbrush?

The rule of thumb that most dentists and dental hygienists say is to change your toothbrush every three or four months.  However, if the bristles get damaged, start to fray or bend before three months, it might be time for a new bamboo toothbrush.

Upcycling your bamboo toothbrush

When it’s time to change your bamboo toothbrush, there are several things you can do with or with your toothbrush, rather than just throwing it away or composting the handle. Please note that the bristles should not be composted, as they are nylon. *(We are actively looking for a natural bristle material, and hope to pivot soon!)*

Below are a few ideas for upcycling your bamboo toothbrush. *You should also disinfect your bristles before reusing.

  • Use it to clean out your keyboards, monitors, mouse and cell phone.
  • Use them to clean the small crevices in your car.
  • Dust off the rims of your planters, if you get dust, sand or soil.
  • Clean plant leaves after repotting.
  • Clean delicate objects.
  • Scrub dirt off delicate fruits, veggies, and mushrooms.
  • Use to clean out hard to reach residue in bottles, jars and cups

Happy Brushing!
